An easy way to determine if your attic is sufficiently insulated is by poking your head up into your attic and surveying the span of it. If the insulation is just level or below the joists you should add more. If you cannot see the joists because the insulation is well above them than you probably have enough. The insulation should be evenly distributed without any low spots. Also there should be insulation baffles near the air vents so your attic has proper air circulation.
How much insulation do I need to add?
Insulation levels are measured by R-Value. R-Value indicates an insulations resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. The suggested R-Value for most attics is R38 which is about 10-14 inches.
